Ushaw Historic House

Ushaw Historic House, located near Durham City in County Durham, is a heritage site known for its Georgian country house origins and remarkable Gothic Revival architecture, particularly its chapels designed by Augustus Pugin. Originally founded in 1808 as St Cuthbert’s College, a Roman Catholic seminary created by priests fleeing the French Revolution, the estate expanded over the centuries to include gardens, a library, and various community facilities. Since the seminary’s closure in 2011, Ushaw has reopened as a cultural attraction featuring art exhibitions, music, theatre events, and landscaped gardens, welcoming over 100,000 visitors annually.
